Mpower Me e-Magazine May Issue

Also included are downloadable worksheets and several guided meditations. All of the lessons offer practical, easy-to-implement advice that you can start implementing immediately. The Stress Summit is a collection of 37 enlightening video interviews about the latest discoveries about stress management. According to Dr. Heidi Hanna, the summit’s host, ” Not everyone experiences stress the same, but everyone does feel the pressure that comes from not having enough time, energy or resources to get everything done. Yet, no one talks about it for fear of appearing disorganised or weak — but, there’s hope! During this summit, our researchers will teach you about the “new” science of stress, which shows that you can be in control of your life!” I have attended quite a few of these virtual seminars – some of them are more useful than others. This one is hands-down the best I have ever attended. I highly recommend it. You can find out more about it here.

Eckhart Tolle, the author of the Power of Now, has just released three enriching video’s about the “Power of Presence.” The direct link to this videos and webinar is here. If this does not work, you may have to hand over your e-mail address here, but it is worth it, you can always unsubscribe afterwards. There is also a webinar and as with all webinars, this one is about selling you something – the new Power of Presence course. Up to you if you want to watch the webinar. The Free Video Teaching Series on The Power of Presence include:

Video 1: “Why Presence?” — Eckhart tells us that the arising of Presence is “no longer a luxury, but a necessity” and “the most important thing that can happen in your lifetime.”
Video 2: “Love and Presence” — Eckhart discusses love in the conventional sense and the transformational power of Presence in our relationships.
Video 3: ”Practicing Presence” — Bringing Presence into our daily lives and activities is about having a friendly attitude toward whatever arises in the moment—something that we can all learn and get better at.

The 8-week online Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course is 100% free. It was created by a fully certified MBSR instructor and is modeled on the program founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn. It includes contributions from Jon Kabat-Zinn(Wherever You Go, There You Are) himself, Pema Chodron (When Things Fall Apart), Tara Brach (Radical Acceptance), Sylvia Boorstein (Don’t Just Do Something, Sit There), Sharon Salzberg (A Heart As Wide as the World), Robert Sapolsky (Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers), Marshall Rosenberg (Non-Violent Communication), and Jack Kornfield (A Path with Heart). This Month’s French Vignette

We were sitting on the backstoep one afternoon earlier this month when we suddenly had to put our mugs down. The road leading towards and past our back door was filled from side to side with fairly fast moving sheep. An energetic Pyrenean Mountain dog was hurrying them along, up the hill towards us, barking excitedly. The whole valley was filled with the sound of their bells. There was no room for a car to pass and indeed, two cars shortly came into sight behind the sheep, crawling along at a slow walking pace. In front of the cars walked the shepherd, old and withered,  swinging his walking stick and whistling intermittently to his dog.

It was the first time that the transhumance came past our farm. Admittedly, this is only our second year on the farm, so it might be an annual happening, but it is the first time we are here to witness it. The transhumance is the bi-annual trek the local shepherds undertake in spring and in autumn. In spring, they go up into the mountains, in autumn they come down again. On foot. I ran into the house, desperately searching for my camera (why can I never find it when I need it urgently?) and once I got hold of it, I ran out the front door and took pictures and the flock of sheep rounded the corner in front of the chapel:

This century-old tradition made me think.  Wouldn’t it make more sense to load the sheep on a truck and drive them up into the Pyrenées and then down again? It would save so much time. It did not make sense to the shepherd.  He explained patiently to me that he can not afford to pay for the transport. He owns nothing, apart from the sheep and the dog. He has no land, he grazes his sheep on pastures made available to him in the mountains in summer and in the valleys in winter by the generosity of the individual communes (villages) where he stays until the grass runs out. He has few belongings, apart from what he is carrying with him. He sleeps wherever he can find shelter in summer, in an unheated bothy in winter. He eats what he finds, wears what is given him. The little money he earns comes from the shearing of his sheep, once a year. His words as he left me still ring in my ears, “What is Time in a life like mine? It has little meaning. I am in no hurry. The transhumance is no hardship for me. I walk slowly and stop regularly to let the sheep graze. I catch up with old friends and meet new ones. I enjoy the generosity of the land and of its people. I have nothing but time. I have all the time in the world to experience life.”

I thought me a valuable lesson that day, that those who are the wealthiest, are those who have time to fully experience life.

I mentioned at the end of last month’s issue that I will have some very interesting and exciting news for you in this issue. Last month, I shared my personal mission statement with you: My mission is to help people manage stress more effectively and so avoid the substantial damage that stress can do to their physical, social and psychological health. I also help people to increase their self-esteem, because the more confident we are, the better we handle stress. I do this by leading stress management workshops and by writing stress-reducing and confidence-boosting books.  

This has been my mission ever since I had to retire from medical practice and it has served me well over the years, allowing me to build a profitable business selling workshops and books. I have received much and I now want to give something of myself back. Time is my most precious commodity, so I have decided to donate my time to help as many women as I can by offering a safe environment where they can find encouragement, support and inspiration.

I have created a LinkedIn group named Mpowering Women, to celebrate the lives and achievements of the women we admire and who inspire us as role models. Whenever you need inspiration, you can read these amazing women’s stories. Here you can share the challenges that you, as a working woman, come up against and get support from other women who have struggled and solved similar problems and situations before. Here we support each other, share what works for us, learn from each other, empower each other and celebrate our own and each other’s achievements. The time it takes to find inspiring articles, quotes, videos and meme’s, to reply to member’s posts and to moderate the group is my gift to our group. The group is only a month old and already it has 61 members. To give you an idea of the quotes you might come across if you should join our group, I include a small number below:

No last-minute special offers this month, because of the 4 Connect with Horses Stress Management group workshops we are hosting this year, two are already fully booked: the June and August workshops. The dates of the other 2 are:

You can attend 3/5/7 days, on your own, or with a non-participating partner. You can also opt for an individual workshop, at no extra charge, that can be scheduled any time from May to November.

New Workshops

As we did last year, we are again hosting our Walking and Wine Tasting Weekends (4 days/3 nights) that include walking two sections of the Camino de Santiago de Compostella. This year we have added a Walking and Wine Tasting Week (8 days/7 nights), that starts with the two Camino-walks followed by another three walks through the countryside to local wine cellars. On our wedding anniversary this year, we visited the Buffalo Ranch near Aignan, where we met some very friendly water buffalo. These are youngsters, the oldest was 3 years old.
